In 2020, just over half of U.S. coffee consumers opted for medium roast coffee, according to a survey asking people what kind of coffee roast they consumed the day before. About 15 percent of respondents preferred a lighter roast.
Coffee grinding method
Most coffee drinkers in the United States (roughly three-quarters) bought already ground coffee, meaning they would not need to grind it at home. One in five U.S. coffee consumers did purchase whole bean coffee that year with the intention of grinding it themselves.
Cold brew consumers
Cold brew coffee is created by extracting the coffee at cooler temperatures, and it typically tastes smoother and not as bitter as traditionally brewed blends. Consumers aged 18 to 39 were quite positive about this newer type of coffee in 2019: about 22 percent of 25 to 39-year-olds rated the beverage as “excellent”, compared to 4 percent of those aged 60 and over. Across the different regions in the United States, opinions on cold brew were relatively similar. About thirty percent of respondents in each of the four regions rated the beverage as “good” in 2019.
