Facebook users worldwide – additional information
Social networking is one of the most popular online activities. Social network users accounted for about 68 percent of the global online population in 2016, and these figures are projected to grow in the coming years. The number of social network users is forecast to grow from 2.14 billion in 2015 to nearly three billion by 2020. Facebook is by far a market leader, registering a total of 1.7 billion monthly active users as of September 2016. Facebook users can communicate with friends and family, play games, share content via the network, along with many other activities. As of the first quarter of 2016, the “like” button was listed as the most popular Facebook features. About 80 percent of Facebook users worldwide stated using the “like” button in the last month. Other popular Facebook activities include watching a video, reading an article, messaging friends on a one-to-one basis and reading news stories.
Facebook-owned Whatapp and Facebook Messenger, both instant messaging services, ranked second in terms of number of active users; each platform had about one billion active users during the measured period. Facebook Messenger was released in 2011 with the goal of taking over the instant messaging functionality from the main Facebook app. As of the third quarter of 2015, the most popular Facebook Messenger activity is sending a message, as 90 percent of users stated that they had sent a message via the messaging app in the last month. Sending photos is also a common activity for Facebook Messenger users – nearly 50 percent of them send photos via the app – while sending a sticker is fairly popular amongst 35 percent of Facebook Messenger users.
