Due to the safety restrictions put in place during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, several museums worldwide had to close to the public. As a result, many institutions were forced to implement budget cuts in order to face the financial losses caused by closures. According to an October 2020 study, more than a half of the surveyed museums in the United States implemented furloughs or layoffs during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Overall, about 26 percent of institutions laid-off part-time staff. Meanwhile, 21 percent of museums involved in the research claimed to have laid-off full time staff.
