Dry January - Statistics & Facts

Dry January is the growing trend of taking the challenge of completely abstaining from alcohol for the month of January. Dry January began as an ad campaign from the British charity Alcohol Change UK in 2014 but has grown into a global phenomenon in recent years. This increased interest in the challenge has coincided with a general increase in consumption of alcohol in the U.S.. The average American drinks more now than they have in the last 30 years.

Participation

In Great Britain, where Dry January was born, 15 percent of drinkers intended to take part in the challenge in 2023. Men were more likely to state that they would not be participating. Participation also varied by age with younger consumers most likely to abstain during the month. As the trend moved across the Atlantic to the United States, participation grew substantially in 2022 but has declined in 2023. Following the same pattern as the UK, it was younger American consumers that were most likely to take part in Dry January.

Alcohol replacement

Not only has Dry January participation slipped in 2023, but those who are participating are less likely to purchase non-alcoholic drinks instead of alcohol than they were a year ago. This may be because consumers have begun change their shopping behavior as they notice that high inflation is not a passing trend. Of consumers that did choose to replace alcohol with non-alcoholic beverages during Dry January in 2022, younger consumers were once again the most likely to actively participate.
