Advertising agencies in the United States – statistics & facts

The prognostic for the financials of the United States multi-billion-dollar advertising industry remained positive in the post-pandemic world. After growing by about 23 percent in the first year after the coronavirus outbreak, the U.S. media ad revenue was forecast to surpass 350 billion U.S. dollars in 2023 – an annual value projected to increase by over 20 percent over the following four years, reaching 424 billion dollars by 2027. Perhaps unsurprisingly, digital agencies had the upper hand throughout that expansion, with a combined revenue estimated at 30.6 billion dollars in 2022. That would be an over fivefold growth compared to a decade earlier. Concurrently, digital's share in ad agencies' revenue in the U.S. went from little more than 30 percent in 2011 to over 64 percent in 2021, suggesting that online advertising might continue to reach new heights following COVID-19's impact on consumer behavior.

Leading ad agency networks

The most prominent advertising, marketing, and public relations holdings operate across America, generating turnovers in the billions of dollars annually. The latest data available shows that, in the U.S. alone, the net revenues of giants such as New York City-based Interpublic Group (IPG) and London-based WPP amounted to nearly 5.8 billion and 4.9 billion dollars, respectively. From Madison Avenue, Omnicom amassed more than seven billion dollars in gross revenue; so did Paris-based Publicis. That same year, the top five ad agency networks in the U.S. recorded a combined revenue of 2.6 billion dollars. Deloitte Digital alone accounted for over one-third of that result. BBDO and TBWA (both run by Omnicom) followed. Altogether, the two networks accounted for 40 percent of the quintet's turnover. Yet stellar performances on the planet's most influential ad market do not always translate to the rest of the world. Omnicom's global revenue stalled in 2022, standing below pre-pandemic standards.

New businesses: harder and scarcer

Of the four leading global ad groups, the two headquartered in the U.S. (IPG and Omnicom) had the lowest estimated new business revenue in 2022, at around 249 million and 261 million dollars, respectively. Those results combined amounted to less than two-thirds of Publicis's 805-million-dollar turnover, for instance. A study conducted every year among ad agency executives conveyed a bleaker scenario. In 2021, more than half of the respondents said new business opportunities increased; the following year, almost 43 percent noticed a decline. The same survey indicated tougher times succeeding the comparatively rosy 2021. Over 40 percent of the interviewees said it was harder to obtain new business in 2022. A year earlier, nearly the same share reported it being easier. If that complexity reflects the global economy, ad businesspeople should brace themselves for the upcoming challenges.
