Global video game market - additional information
The popularity of video games has continued to increase on a global scale over the past several decades, primarily due to a larger variety of gaming platforms, such as smartphones and gaming consoles. Owing to its popularity, the value of the global video game market is also expected to grow in the future. In 2013, the industry was estimated to be worth 65.7 billion U.S. dollars and forecasts suggest that by 2018, this value will have reached 89 billion U.S. dollars. As a result, more video game companies are being established with aspirations of securing a place on the global stage. Existing companies such as Google and Roku are also trying to expand their business into the gaming industry by releasing their own video game consoles.
Gaming consoles have been the most popular with consumers in the recent past and would therefore appear to be the most reliable platform for expanding business to focus their efforts on. In 2013, out of the total 93.3 billion U.S. dollars of revenue, it was believed that of all video game platforms, video game consoles generated 44.3 billion U.S. dollars alone. This value is estimated to increase until 2015, when console revenues will amount to approximately 55.1 billion U.S. dollars.
Of course once consumers get their hands on the console of their choice, the time they spend playing can be endless. In 2008, it was believed that Americans spent 17.8 minutes a day playing video games, with the time expected to increase to 28.3 minutes in 2018.
