The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic hit the museum sector hard, as several institutions worldwide had to close to the public due to the emergency restrictions put in place during the health crisis. As a result, many museums around the world expected revenue losses in 2020. According to a November 2020 study, about 20 percent of surveyed museums in North America believed that their revenue losses would be higher than 50 percent in 2020. Meanwhile, about a quarter of the institutions involved in the study expected that revenue could drop up to 25 percent.
