Holiday gifts: what U.S. consumers plan to buy 2021-2022

According to an online holiday shopping survey carried out in the United States in September 2022, toys, apparel, and gift cards were some of the most popular Christmas gifts shoppers were planning to buy – over 75 percent of respondents stated that they wanted to buy such goods as a present during this year's holiday season.

Holiday gift expenses

The average planned expenditure among Americans on holiday gifts for family members came to a total of over 510 U.S. dollars in 2021, which would be the highest average spending measured in the past decade and a half. On the other hand, projected gift expenditures on friends remained similar to last year and has been higher in the past.

What would people like to receive?

Knowing what to buy others for the holidays can be tricky, as everyone has their own interests and the fact that it is not always apparent what friends and family might want to receive as a gift. That said, a lot of what people are buying seems to coincide with what people want; during last year's Christmas, many individuals in the United States said they would personally be happy with clothing or shoes, as well as vouchers or gift cards.
