Number of international tourists visiting the Balearic Islands 2001-2018 The number of international tourists visiting the Balearic Islands grew considerably over the last 17 years, reaching a record high of 13.8 million visitors in 2018 according to the latest studies. The Spanish autonomous community of the Balearic Islands is comprised of four main islands and, with a population of slightly under 1.2 million people. The Mediterranean hotspot is a popular sunny retreat for many Europeans.
Sun and beach tourism in the Balearics

On top of the approximately 14 million foreign visitors, in 2018, the Balearic Islands also accommodated approximately 5.5 million Spaniards. Looking at these numbers, it is easy to understand that international holidaymakers represent in the tourism industry of the Balearic Islands. Foreign tourists spent an average of 6.9 nights enjoying the islands’ great sunny and warm weather. While this figure has been decreasing slightly over the last years, the average expenditure of overseas visitors has been growing on the rise and was estimated at 156 euros daily per tourist in 2018.

Tourism constitutes an essential industry for the Spanish economic system

Spain ranked second on the World Tourism Organization’s list of most visited countries in the world, with its number of international visitors amounting to nearly 82 million in 2017. Travel and tourism have become one of the leading engines of growth for the Spanish economy, featuring an ongoing increase in the GDP contribution over the last years and projected to reach approximately 178 billion euros in 2018. The industry also plays a key role to boost the Spanish employment market, which has been experiencing a significant improvement since the 2007 financial crisis jeopardized and destroyed many jobs across the country.
