Industry revenue of “retail sale of furniture, lighting equipment“ in Germany 2011-2023

Even though the German retail furniture industry is among the largest in Europe in terms of value, it is not expected to register strong growth over the short to medium term. In fact, industry revenues have been estimated to increase only marginally from 46.6 billion U.S. dollars in 2018 to 48.3 billion U.S. dollars in 2023.

This tepid growth is mainly a result of the growth experienced by the online channel, which has gathered significant momentum globally. These days, buying furniture online is a fairly common thing. Thanks to significant advancements in logistics, shipping costs for larger items have come down so far that they are often outweighed by potential cost savings and the added choice and convenience of ordering your furniture online. Otto.de, amazon.de, ikea.com, bett1.de and lidl.de are the top five online stores in this space in the country.

Poland is the largest exporter of furniture to Germany

Poland is the go-to-market for Germany when it comes to imports, followed by China, Czech Republic and Italia. Poland is fast emerging as one of the hottest furniture manufacturing destinations in Europe, slowly eating into the share of traditional heavyweights such as Italy and Denmark. From a global perspective, Poland’s timing couldn’t have been better, with the US-China trade war having diminished China’s attractiveness and credibility. The country’s total furniture exports increased from just 6.3 billion Euros in 2010 to around 11.4 billion in 2017, with the future expected to continue in the same vein.
