Industry revenue of “specialized freight (except used goods) trucking, local“ in the U.S. 2011-2023

There has been much talk over the last few years on the state of America’s trucking industry with many challenges being highlighted. Isolation over long distances, low wage growth, employee shortage, strict government rules, reduction in transport costs and price pressure from customers and competitors, have made truck driving tough work. In fact, the average wage cost per mile of freight trucking drivers increased from 0.44 U.S dollars in 2008 to just 0.6 dollars a decade later in 2018.

Despite these challenges, revenues in the country’s specialized freight (except used goods) trucking, local industry are expected to witness some growth over the period 2018-2023, increasing from 40.1 billion U.S dollars to 42.1 billion.

Employees shortage restricting industry growth

The overall freight trucking industry in the U.S. has been facing a shortage of drivers, despite the total number of employees registering a marginal growth over 2010-2017. According to data released by American Trucking Associations, the industry needs over 50,000 drivers to meet the current demand generated by retailers such as Amazon and Walmart who are shipping more and more packages across the country.
