Growth of advertising spending in North America 2010-2022, by medium

In North America, internet advertising spending grew by approximately 15 percent in 2019, compared to 2018. However, in 2020 it is estimated to decrease for the first time by 1.2 percent, caused by the coronavirus outbreak. Up until now, the internet has been the fastest growing ad medium in North America. Cinema advertising growth remained consistent over the past nine years and it is expected to return to the same levs in by the end of 2022, after rebounding from a significant decrease due to COVID-19.

In 2019, North America invested a total of 254 billion U.S. dollars in advertising. The continent’s total ad expenditures have been increasing steadily since 2009. Over the coming years, after the drop in spending expected as a result of coronavirus impact, the figures are expected to reach about 254.7 billion U.S. dollars in 2022.

North American ad spending media

Based on market data, various media are employed for advertising purposes in North America. The continent spent approximately 126 billion U.S. dollars on internet advertising, the largest and fastest-growing medium. In contrast, advertisers in North America have spent less on newspaper promotion with each consecutive year, spending just under 15 billion U.S. dollars in 2019.
