About This Statistic
This statistic illustrates the number of HBO domestic subscribers in the United States from 2009 to 2016. As of December 2016, HBO had an estimated 49 million domestic subscribers. HBO's over-the-top video on demand service HBO Now, launched in April 2015, had one million subscribers in March 2016. The premium cable and satellite service had 134 million subscribers worldwide by the end of 2016. As a result of growing subscriber numbers, the company's subscription revenue has naturally increased. In 2016, this revenue reached five billion U.S. dollars for the first time, an increase of almost one billion U.S. dollars from 2012. However, the making of blockbusters such as Game of Thrones and Westworld comes at a cost. In 2016, HBO's total programming costs reached 2.18 billion U.S. dollars, up over one billion U.S. dollars from 2011.
