As of the end of 2021, the number of monthly active users of digital currency wallets almost reached six million. The figure does not only include cryptocurrency wallets but also wallets for the digital renminbi. While it was the digital currency was already being tested beforehand, the Chinese government wanted to allow participants of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing to roll out the digital renminbi to a broader user base. It was one main reason why the number of monthly active users increased towards the end of 2021.
