Average U.S. price of sand and gravel 2007-2018

Average price of sand and gravel in the U.S. from 2007 to 2018 (in U.S. dollars per metric ton)

by T. Wang, last edited May 2, 2019
Average U.S. price of sand and gravel 2007-2018 In the United States, the average prices of sand and gravel is about 8.94 U.S. dollars per metric ton. Regional shortages of sand and gravel which occur in highly populated areas due to reduction in production can lead to these shortages, which in turn produces increased prices in large urban areas. The U.S. is ranked as the largest producer of industrial sand and gravel, however, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) does note the difficulty in estimating exact data as the definition for sand and gravel differ across nations.
Sand and gravel demand

Demand for construction sand and gravel has increased in recent years due to growth in both the private and public construction industry. Many factors can impact production and demand for sand and gravel including infrastructure funding, housing starts, and weather. Similarly, industrial sand and gravel have also increased in tandem with the oil and gas sector. Growth in oil and gas drilling has also led to an increase in hydraulic fracturing (fracking) sand, while some new efficient fracking techniques also require the use of more sand.
