In 2022, complaints relating to identity theft were the most numerous, with 1,108,609 complaints being lodged with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in the United States. Imposter scams, credit bureaus, information furnishers, and report users, online shopping and negative reviews, and banks and lenders rounded out the top five consumer complaints with the FTC.
