From Norway's mountainous fjords to Finland's snow-kissed forests, Scandinavia presents unique and varied challenges to logistical processes and infrastructure. Extreme and sometimes temperamental weather, combined with the geographical landscape, make delivering letters and parcels on time difficult. However, this task must be done, and the Sweden-based PostNord AB has decided to achieve it. With the worldwide e-commerce market set to grow by 11.16 percent between 2023 and 2027, the need for reliable logistics services to deliver goods is more important than ever. The question that must be answered however is; how well is PostNord AB performing?
Founded on June 24th, 2009, as a result of the merger between the Swedish and Danish state-owned postal services, PostNord AB set out to unite and centralize the postal system of the Nordic region. Sending over 1.1 billion letters and 245 million parcels in 2022, PostNord remains a market leader in the CEP market in Europe. The company's financial performance also remained strong, with an operating income of 357 million SEK in 2022. Although a drop compared to the previous year, the company has maintained a strong operating profit since the negative performance reported between 2016 and 2018. PostNord is also a major employer across the Nordic countries, with the average number of employees hitting 26,701 people in 2022.
However, whilst the company's performance is relatively stable, the market is ever-changing and, at times, volatile. The total operating expenses of the company increased to over 40 billion SEK in 2022, therefore limiting the overall amount obtained in operating income. When looking at competitor data, companies such as Deutsche Post DHL Group and FedEx have increased their revenue and EBIT, marking a supposed constraint to the financial gains that PostNord can obtain. Despite the challenges, PostNord is in a position to remain a strong competitor in the Nordic market.
In recent years, PostNord has made a commitment to reducing the amount of CO₂ produced by the companies' logistical operations. In 2022, the company produced 724,482 tons of CO₂ from its operations across the Nordics, an increase compared to the previous year. As such, the Swedish firm has increased its investment in alternative energy vehicles and put in limiting the amount of paper waste created by the companies' processes. These measures constitute a global initiative to reduce emissions and lessen the amount of energy consumed. It is therefore fair to say that whatever the future may bring, PostNord is destined to continue transporting letters and parcels across the Nordic region and its ever-expanding operations could transcend across Europe and elsewhere in the world.
