SMS traffic in Tanzania by type 2018-2021
In March 2021, just over 11.3 billion short messages (SMS) were sent in Tanzania. The majority of these messages was made up of local off-net SMS which reached a 54 percent share during the first quarter of 2021. With its high number of outgoing national text messages, Tanzania surpassed fellow East African Community (EAC) country Kenya, where 14 billion SMS messages were sent domestically in the fourth quarter of 2020.
On-net SMS are messages that remain within the sender's home network, whereas off-net SMS are either sent from a different network or received by a number from a network operated by a different provider.
EA or EAC refers to the group of countries organized in the East African Community Organization: The Republics of Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Uganda and the United Republic of Tanzania.
