Greenland ice sheet loss 1992-2018
Between 1992 and 2018, the Greenland Ice Sheet lost roughly 3,800 billion metric tons of ice. This figure was determined by the ice sheet mass balance inter-comparison exercise (IMBIE) team. Increasing meltwater runoff accounted for about 1,970 billion tons of this ice mass loss. The melting Greenland Ice Sheet is a major contributor to sea level rise. As global warming continues, the rate at which the ice sheet melts is at risk of accelerating.
