This statistic shows the U.S. health investment by section in select years between 1960 and 2017. In 2000, health investment in research came to 25.5 billion U.S. dollars, while investment in structures and equipment stood at some 58 billion U.S. dollars.

U.S. health investment

Health investments have always been dominated by structures and equipment rather than by investments on research. In 2017, research investments totaled nearly 51 billion U.S. dollars and structures and equipment health investments reached some 117 billion U.S. dollars in the United States. In comparison, the national health expenditure reached 3.5 trillion U.S. dollars in 2017, accounting for around 18 percent of the country’s GDP. According to some projections, it is expected that health expenditure will reach 37 percent of the country’s GDP by 2050.

In the private sector, Grail received one of the largest venture financing deals in the global biotech/medtech industry, totaling 314 million U.S. dollars. Grail is a California-based biotech and data science company, engaged in discovering and developing breakthrough treatments for cancer. In the United States’ biosciences industry, the biotech human sector received over 23 billion U.S. dollars in venture capital investments between 2014 and 2017. Currently, the U.S. is one of the largest contributors to biomedical research in the world, however, recently, their support had begun to decline slightly while other countries have begun to increase their research expenditures.
