In Canada, the median waiting time between an appointment with a specialist and treatment exceeds the clinically reasonable waiting time. For example, in 2023, while the reasonable waiting time was nine weeks, patients could expect to wait over 13 weeks.

The gap between actual and clinically reasonable waiting times varied greatly from one specialty to another. For instance, while the clinically appropriate waiting time was only 13 weeks, the average waiting time in orthopedic surgery was 30 weeks. Nonetheless, the current waiting time for treatment reflected the reasonable waiting time for medical oncology.
