In the fiscal year 2017, the volume of total food waste generated in Japan was estimated to reach approximately 6.1 million tons. Close to half was from food waste generated in the food industry, such as the food manufacturing industry and restaurants. The source defines food waste or food loss as food that was disposed of although it was still edible.
