Independently-run hotels are slowly losing ground in Europe. From 2015 to 2021, the market share of independent hotels in Europe – in terms of the total number of rooms – shrank from 63 to 60 percent. The lost market share was taken up by chain hotels which now enjoy two-fifths of the overall market share. The total number of rooms owned by independent hotels amounted to 2.55 million in 2021, while chain hotels numbered 1.72 million.
