Number of hotel and similar lodging rooms Qatar 2008-2021

According to data from the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), in 2021, the number of rooms in hotels and similar establishments in Qatar amounted to around 29 thousand. This was an increase from almost ten thousand rooms in 2011.

In 2022, Qatar hosted the FIFA World Cup. The number of international tourist arrivals in Qatar was forecasted to reach over one million in that year. Over 70 percent of hotel projects in Doha were planned to be completed by 2022. The completion of hotel projects promised to increase the number of rooms in the capital city of Qatar from 25 thousand in 2018 to 44 thousand in 2022.

 Qatar’s GDP and FIFA World Cup 2022

The expenditure of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) on the Qatar World Cup was more than 1.7 billion U.S. dollars. Sources predicted that the gross domestic product (GDP) growth in Qatar would soar from 0.8 percent in 2019 to about 3.6 percent in 2022. The contribution of the country’s tourism sector to its economy is expected to continue rising after the World Cup to almost reach 24 billion U.S. dollars by 2028.
