In the fiscal year 2021, the domestic coal demand for energy generation in Japan amounted to approximately 2.98 thousand petajoules. Figures peaked in fiscal 2013, reaching around 3.26 thousand petajoules, but indicated a slight downward trend in more recent years. Following petroleum, coal was one of the leading sources for the primary energy supply in Japan.
