The coronavirus pandemic hit the global business tourism industry hard as the ability to travel was limited in order to reduce the spread of the virus. As a result, most business travel companies were forced to take action, implementing layoffs or furloughs. According to a November 2020 survey, 73 percent of respondents stated that frontline service providers (i.e. fight attendants, travel agents, and hotel concierges) were greatly affected by layoffs or furloughs due to the pandemic. Respondents were employed by travel suppliers or travel management companies that had laid off or furloughed employees.
