Y-o-y sales area growth of supermarkets in Europe 2020, by country
In 2020, Russia and Sweden reported the highest percentage growth in sales area of supermarkets. Compared to the previous year, the two countries registered an increase of 6.4 and 5.4 percent, respectively. On the contrary, the sales area of stores between 300 and 6,000 square meters showed a stagnating trend in the UK. The decrease of sales area in Italy amounted to 8.8 percent and was due to a change in the number of retail chains in the country over 2019.
