By April 2022, 209 local governments in Japan implemented a same-sex partnership system. The number of municipalities allowing civil unions doubled compared to the previous year. At the same time, the number of registered couples increased from around 1.7 to 2.8 thousand. Japan does not allow same-sex marriage. Local governments, instead, introduced same-sex partnership systems that grant certain rights to registered couples.
