The total assets of the Bank of England increased significantly between 2006 and 2023, with particularly sharp increases in 2021 and 2022. This was due to the quantitative easing that was initiated as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2023, the total assets of the central bank decreased slightly but remained above one trillion British pounds. In Europe, the largest central bank in terms of total assets is the Deutsche Bundesbank, which held almost three trillion euros at the end of 2022. The Bank of England ranked fourth.
