Mobile phone user penetration in Mexico 2015-2022

In 2022, 79.2 percent of households in Mexico owned a mobile phone. Although due to a change in methodology, this figure is not comparable to previous years, the penetration of these devices in Mexican households increased by almost eight percentage points since 2015.

Under the smartphone spell

The convenience of having access to it all in a few taps has turned smartphones into a technology hard to disregard. In 2022, nine out of ten mobile devices used in Mexico were smartphones. Thus, new chip and wireless broadband technologies have equipped millions in the country with handheld computers capable of performing almost any task with ease. According to a 2019 survey, some of the most common activities performed through these devices were those linked to communication and entertainment, including sending messages and browsing social networks.

The internet has gone mobile

Although PCs and laptops used to be the benchmark for internet access, smartphones have quickly eclipsed both of their usage rates. As of May 2023, smartphones were the device of choice for navigating the web in Mexico, used by more than 95 percent of internet users surveyed in the country. While in terms of volume, desktop web traffic remains higher than that of mobile phones, widespread smartphone adoption has pushed these devices to account for over 42 percent share of all online traffic in the North American country as of December 2022.
