Fatalities in non-state conflicts in Middle East 2023
There were registered fatalities in four conflicts that did not involve a state actor in the Middle East in 2023. The highest number was registered in Syria in the conflict between the Syrian National Army (SNA) and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). Here, the best estimate puts the number of fatalities at almost 260. The second highest number was also registered in Syria, where around 120 people were killed in the conflict between the Islamic State and the SDF.
A non-state conflict is defined as a conflict where none of the actors is the government or a state, where there is use of force between two organized armed groups, and from which there are at least 25 battle-related deaths each year.
