In 2020/21, of the total 219 NHS providers, 33 were in deficit in the UK. Foundation trusts and trusts that provide acute services accounted for the majority of providers in deficit. In 2018, the 5-year NHS funding plan stated no provider should be in deficit by 2023/24.
