Number of university students in Finland 2024, by university
The University of Helsinki was the largest university in Finland in 2024, with 32,006 registered students. The second-largest university was Tampere University, which was established on January 1, 2019, when the University of Tampere merged with Tampere University of Technology. Aalto University, located in the capital region and offering education in fields such as art, business, and engineering, had almost 21,000 students in the same year.
Most university students were women in 2024
In the academic year of 2024, starting on the 1st of August, almost 20,800 of registered students at the University of Helsinki were women, while only 11,200 were men. Out of the largest universities, only Aalto University had the opposite gender distribution, with around 13,200 male students and 7,800 female students.
Almost 4,500 women completed their degree at the University of Helsinki in 2024
The University of Helsinki was leading in the number of completed qualifications and degrees during the academic year of 2023, with 4,486 women and 1,726 men completing their qualification or degree. In the academic year 2022/23, roughly 5.4 percent of students in Finnish universities discontinued their studies.
