Petroleum energy accounted for approximately 36 percent of the total primary energy supply in Japan in fiscal year 2021. The ongoing decrease since fiscal 2012 was a result of the attempt of the government to substitute liquefied natural gas (LNG) power and renewable energy for petroleum.
