From January 1, 2018 to July 31, 2020, VCU Medical Center in Richmond, Virginia filed around 17,806 lawsuits or other court actions against patients who had unpaid medical bills. During this time period, just 10 of the largest 100 hospitals in the United States by revenue accounted for 97 percent of court actions against patients. Some hospitals, including VCU Medical Center, stopped suing patients in 2020 due to policy changes, but it is still unclear if this will last.
