As of December 31, 2022, there were almost 36,000 pensioners in France under the general pension plan (with derogations) who were living with a permanent disability. Out of these 36,000, approximately 22,100 were men and around 13,800 were women. Furthermore, men also represented 40,117 of the 49,240 retired asbestos workers in France in 2022.

The retirement pension may consist of several distinct elements, governed by different attribution rules. The first element is the main advantage of direct right. It is acquired in return for the professional activity and thus the contributions paid (and validations of quarters acquired) related thereto. This benefit may be transferred to the surviving spouse upon the death of the beneficiary. This is referred to as a derivative right benefit, often referred to as a survivor's pension, which can be cumulated with a principal direct benefit.
