The Central Valley and a relatively young population
Most of the population of Costa Rica resides in the area known as Central Valley, a region that comprises various urban areas such as San Jose (the capital and
most populated city), Cartago, Alajuela, and Heredia. The Valley has been one of the favorite areas to work and reside for Costa Ricans, which can also be explained due to the higher poverty levels in the rural areas.
The population in the country is still quite young, with over 68 percent close to the limits of the legal working age and 20 percent younger than 14 years old.
Nuptiality and birth
During the last 12 years, both the
marriage rate and
birth rate in the Central American country have been decreasing considerably. In 2010, the nuptiality was 5.3 marriages per thousand inhabitants while the birth rate was 15.6 newborns per thousand inhabitants. As of 2022, the marriage rate was 4.4 and the number of newborns dropped to 10.2. Costa Rica’s falling rates leave the country in a very difficult position, while the influx of migrant population has increased in the last few years with Nicaraguan migrants arriving from the North, the expectation still is to continue the current trend.
