Industry revenue of “processing and preserving of fruit and vegetables“ in Spain 2012-2024

Revenues generated from processing and preserving of fruits and vegetables in Spain are projected to grow from 8.9 billion U.S. dollars in 2012 to 13.5 billion U.S. dollars by 2024, owing to technological innovations, advanced canning and sterilization techniques and the growing number of SME’s in the country. Amongst the three segments, majority of the revenues are generated from the sales of processed fruits and vegetables, with supermarkets being the main distribution channel.

Orange is the most popular fruit

In 2018, a total of 90.5 kilograms of fresh fruit were consumed in the country per capita. Oranges had the highest per capita consumption at 17.04 kilograms, followed by bananas, apples and watermelons. In terms of vegetable consumption per capita, tomatoes were the most widely consumed product, followed by onions and peppers. Spanish companies such as Sociedad de compras modernas SA and Anecoop SC dominated the fruit and vegetable trade in the country.

Nice Fruit discovers new fruit freezing technology

After nearly a decade of research, Spanish company Nice Fruit has discovered a new process to freeze fruits for up to three years, without the loss of their nutritional properties. According to the company’s President, Miquel Pastor, this new breakthrough will allow the export of fruits without any fears of them going bad. Moreover, it would also present new opportunities to farmers.
