As of 2021, a total of approximately 11.6 thousand patents were granted in the pharmaceutical industry in Japan. About 7.2 thousand cases of which were not actively used either for the in-house production or for licenses that are sold to other companies. That year, the utilization rate of the patents owned in the industry amounted to around 37.9 percent.
