The M2 money supply in the United States decreased monthly between July 2022 and March 2023, after a period of sharp increase starting in February 2020. The unusually sharp increase in 2020 and 2021 was a result of the Federal Reserve's quantitative easing in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The M1 money supply went through an even sharper increase during the same period. As of March 2023, the value of M2 money supply in the United States amounted to roughly 20.8 trillion U.S. dollars.

The source adds the following information: M2 includes a broader set of financial assets held principally by households. M2 consists of M1 plus: savings deposits (which include money market deposit accounts, or MMDAs); small-denomination time deposits (time deposits in amounts of less than 100,000 U.S. dollars); and balances in retail money market mutual funds (MMMFs). Seasonally adjusted M2 is computed by summing savings deposits, small-denomination time deposits, and retail MMMFs, each seasonally adjusted separately, and adding this result to seasonally adjusted M1.
