In 2021, there were no cases of cross-border travel from North to South Korea. After the closing of the Kaesong Industrial Complex in February 2016, cross-border travel plummeted. Events in prior years such as the 2014 Incheon Asian Games and the reopening of the Kaesong Industrial Complex after it had been closed for nearly five months, led to the increase in cross-border travel in 2014. The founding of the Inter-Korean Liaison Office in Kaesong led to increased cross-border travel from North Korea to South Korea; however this building was destroyed in 2020.
