Largest lenders to coal utilities in Europe 2019

The Italian banking and financial services institution UniCredit is the leading lender to major coal utilities in Europe. Between November 2018 and December 2019, UniCredit held roughly 2.8 billion euros in credits from companies such as Enel, Fortum, and RWE. Scandinavian bank Nordea is the sixth largest creditor to coal-reliant utilities, despite only five percent of the Swedish population supporting coal expansion, some of the lowest support rates worldwide.
