Share of nursing home beds managed by the public or private sectors 2020
In 2020, the extent to which care beds in European nursing homes are operated by the private or public sector varies greatly per country. During that year, most care beds in Austrian, French, or Czech nursing homes were owned by the public sector, whereas most beds in Ireland were managed by the for-profit private sector. In Europe, however, a significant share of nursing home beds was operated by non-profit private organisms. In the Netherlands, Poland, and Portugal, the vast majority of beds are managed by non-profit private nursing homes. For instance, 96 percent of beds were under such ownership in the Netherlands.
