In 2021, Greece owned the biggest share of the global merchant fleet, about 17.6 percent. China ranked second with a share of some 11.6 percent. At the beginning of 2020, there were around 55,000 ships in the world's merchant fleet.

The vessels covered in data include all propelled sea-going merchant vessels of 1000 gross tons (GT) and above, including offshore drill ships and Floating Production, Storage and Offloading units (FPSOs). Military vessels, yachts, waterway vessels, fishing vessels, and offshore fixed and mobile platforms and barges are excluded
