Over the past decade, the volume of containers handled in ports in the European Union (EU-27) was generally growing, with the exception of 2015, 2019, and 2020. Most recently, the years 2019 and 2020 saw a decline in container throughput at EU ports of 0.2 and 2.4 percent, respectively. This negative growth was mainly caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, however, over 98 million TEUs of containers were processed in EU ports, recording a growth of 4.1 percent.
