Since 2013, a total of approximately 272 billion U.S. dollars of equity investments have been made in space companies worldwide. Applications made up the majority of investments - these applications were described as "a collective term for all hardware and software systems that leverage space-based infrastructure and distribution to perform specialized tasks for an end market/s". This includes satellite production and launch capabilities, instrumentation, components as well as on-orbit operations. If any of these systems and services were to be interrupted for a significant period of time, the space-based infrastructure may be impaired.
