Global cost of carbon removal 2020, by approach or technology
Carbon caputre technologies are likely to be an essential practice in order to limit emissions and meet global climate targets. This can be achieved through a combination of different approaches, at varied stages of development and adoption. As of September 2020, the cost of carbon capture by afforestation or reforestation was estimated between 50 to 500 U.S. dollars per ton of carbon dioxide. Meanwhile, direct air capture and storage of carbon could result in expenses of up to 345 U.S. dollars per ton of CO₂.
