Italian defense spending was the third highest of all European Union member states in 2021, with the total of 27.5 billion euros being the equivalent of 1.5 percent of GDP. This amount has risen sharply since 2015, when it was at a low of 17.6 billion, however, Italian defense expenditure still consistently falls short of the target set by NATO for military spending of two percent.
