The return on assets (ROA) of the Italian banking industry fluctuated significantly between 2014 and 2023, with an upward trend in recent quarters. The lowest value was recorded in the last quarter of 2016, when the ROA stood at negative 0.7 percent. There was another sharp drop in the ROA in the first quarter of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2023, the ROA of the Italian banking sector increased significantly and reached 1.1 percent in the last quarter.
