Platinum demand and production worldwide

Platinum is a soft, heavy, white colored precious metal. It is most commonly used in catalytic converters for automobiles and is also prominently used in jewelry. The worldwide demand for platinum in 2022 was estimated at 6.8 million ounces. With such a high demand, production of platinum is important in order to meet the demand. The estimated global platinum production in 2022 was 190 metric tons.

Largest platinum producing countries

South Africa is the largest producer of platinum in the world by a significant margin, with production amounting to an estimated 140 metric tons in 2022. Russia comes in a distant second place for world platinum production, having produced some 20 metric tons that same year. Zimbabwe, the third-largest producer, produces about half to three quarters as much as Russia. Canada and the United States are the world's fourth- and fifth-largest producers of platinum, respectively. Their platinum production is even lower than Zimbabwe's production. In the U.S. in fact, there is only one company mining platinum.

Largest platinum mining companies

Anglo American Platinum is the world's largest platinum producing company, having produced 2.4 million ounces of platinum in 2021. Given that Russia is the world's second-largest platinum producing country, it is not surprising that Russia's Nornickel, which produced 634,000 ounces of platinum in 2021, was among the leading platinum producing companies.
